The life and record
<strong>Dr. Assimi Kouanda</strong> was a Burkinabè historian and university scholar whose research became an important contribution to the study of the **Yarsé, Islam and the history of Muslim communities in Burkina Faso**.
Born in **1956**, his academic work centered early on the Yarsé. In **1984**, he completed a doctorate in history at **Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne** examining their commercial and religious functions and their place within Moaga society. He went on to publish on Yarsé identity, the development of Islam in Burkina Faso, relations within the Muslim community, religious movements and the historical place of Islam in Burkinabè society.
At the **University of Ouagadougou**, he taught in the Department of History and Archaeology, later becoming head of the department and vice-dean responsible for academic affairs. His career therefore combined research, teaching and university leadership.
Assimi Kouanda also served Burkina Faso in public life. His responsibilities included local government, service as **Burkina Faso's ambassador to Morocco**, director of cabinet at the Presidency with ministerial rank, Minister of State, and later senior leadership within the CDP. These political responsibilities formed an important second chapter of his career, but they do not define the full measure of his contribution.

His research gives the Museum a documented academic foundation against which family memory, oral tradition and later historical scholarship can be compared.
